All Safety 1st car seats have been tested to meet or exceed the federal safety standards at their time of production. The most recent testing standard (FMVSS 213a) includes updates that standardize side impact testing across all manufacturers.
What is FMVSS 213a?
FMVSS, the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard is a comprehensive set of safety standards for car seats sold in the US. FMVSS 213a is a recent update to the original regulation that standardizes side impact testing for car seats across all manufacturers.
Can I still use my current Safety 1st car seat?
Yes. All Safety 1st car seats are designed and manufactured to meet or exceed the federal safety standards at their time of production. While the recent updates have required some product changes, all Safety 1st car seats are safe to use until their stated expiration date. See your instruction manual and labels for specific information about the requirements of your car seat.
Do these standards apply to every car seat?
No, not all car seats undergo side impact testing, like belt-positioning boosters and backless booster seats, which are designed to work with vehicle seat belts to properly position your child and do not provide side impact protection. The new standard applies to rear-facing infant car seats, forward-facing car seats for children up to 40lbs, and harness booster car seats for children up to 40lbs.
